"JFJ brings hope not only to Jamaican people but it also opens up great
opportunities for people to encounter a short term missions trip! Now, as
a youth pastor I am praying that God will allow my youth and my church to be

"I wholeheartedly endorse the Jesus for Jamaica organization and their ministry
in the areas surrounding Whitehouse, Westmoreland. Their unselfish love

" Take, for example, Jesus for Jamaica, (www.jesusforjamaica.com), a grassroots
Christian organization that hosts teams of volunteers who build houses, schools
and clinics or help teach vacation Bible school.
Emily Johnson, a 22-year-old student at Taylor University-Fort Wayne, leaves in
a week for her seventh mission trip to Whitehouse, a fishing village in Jamaica.
Johnson says it’s the people who first attracted her to the country and the
friends she’s made on trips there that bring her back.
“Knowing that we’re affecting so many lives — it just grabbed my heart and
drew me in,” she said. “Here, we are so much more fortunate. It is
amazing being able to give them what you have.”
Johnson, of Lafayette, plans to stuff two large duffel
bags with Bibles, clothes, toys and candy for the children.
Through her visits in the last couple of years, Johnson
has become a familiar face to the people in the village. She has helped build
rooms onto local shacks, set up a clinic and prepared land for a basketball
court. She sponsors schooling for two boys and frequently calls Jamaica to keep
in touch.
Each time Johnson leaves, she takes with her a
memorable experience. Working in the sun all day and staying on oceanfront
property is a bonus.
“You have to go once to see why you’ll go back,”
she said. “Then you’ll understand.”
